Why We Started

In many households, food runs out before the month ends. When budgets are tight, nutrition is often the first thing that gets sacrificed. Food4Life exists to provide a reliable nutritional top-up that helps families stretch what they have — without making promises that are impossible to sustain.

Vision

A South Africa where vulnerable families have consistent access to nutrition that supports health, energy and dignity — with a long-term vision to expand our impact across Africa.

Mission

To deliver consistent, accountable nutritional support to communities facing malnutrition by partnering with schools, clinics and community leaders, using proven nutrition products and clear reporting so donors can see real impact.

Who we are

Food4Life Foundation is a South African non-profit focused on practical, measurable nutrition support for communities facing food insecurity and malnutrition. We partner with trusted community organisations (starting with schools) to deliver support consistently and with dignity.

Founder background

Food4Life Foundation was founded by Francois Venter, a South African professional rugby player and entrepreneur with a background in hospitality. Through sport and business, Francois has seen how quickly families can fall under pressure — not always because of a lack of effort, but because the cost of living rises faster than household income.

Food4Life started from a simple conviction: consistent nutrition changes outcomes. Francois wanted to move beyond once-off giving and build a practical model that delivers reliable, measurable nutritional support through trusted community partners like schools and clinics. By using the resources, relationships and logistics capability he has built over time, the foundation is designed to get help to the right people — regularly, with dignity, and with real accountability.

Our Approach

Start small, execute well: build a model that can scale.
Month-by-month sustainability: 12-month vision, funded one month at a time.
Weekly distribution via the school to support consistency.
Transparent reporting: buckets purchased, delivered and distributed (privacy-safe).

One in Four South African Households Reported Severely Inadequate Access to Food

South Africa is facing a severe and deepening crisis of hunger and poverty that affects millions of households across the country. According to the most recent Stats SA General Household Survey (2024), nearly one in four South African households (about 22.2 %) reported inadequate or severely inadequate access to food, reflecting widespread food insecurity driven by unemployment, rising living costs, and economic inequality. These conditions mean that millions of people struggle daily to secure enough nutritious food, and basic nutrition has become increasingly unaffordable.

The impacts of food insecurity extend far beyond hunger alone, particularly for children and vulnerable families. A significant portion of South African children live in severe child food poverty, putting them at heightened risk of malnutrition and impairing their long-term growth and development. Broader national surveys also show that a majority of households — around 63.5 % according to the National Food and Nutrition Security Survey — experience some form of food insecurity, highlighting that access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food remains out of reach for many. These stark realities underscore the urgent need for expanded food programmes and sustained support to help ensure that all South Africans can live with dignity, stability, and health.

First project: Nourish90

Nourish90 supports 90 vulnerable families through a trusted school partner in Bloemfontein. It is nutritional support (a top-up), distributed weekly, and funded month-by-month with a 12-month goal.

Key numbers (2kg Daily Care buckets):

  • 1 bucket (2kg) = approx 21 servings (95g serving).
  • Each family receives 6 buckets per month (weekly distribution).

  • Monthly requirement: 90 families x 6 buckets = 540 buckets.
  • Cost to the foundation: R100 per bucket.
  • Monthly programme cost: R54,000. 12-month goal: R648,000.

Accountability and Updates

Every month we record: (1) stock purchased, (2) stock delivered to the partner, (3) weekly distribution confirmation, and (4) a short donor update. Photos and stories are shared only where consent is granted.

Donor Options

  • R100 = Sponsor 1 bucket (2kg).
  • R600/month = Sponsor 1 family (6 buckets).
